燕赵茶韵

Hebei is a framing province, in whose horseshoe lie Beijing and Tianjin. Through it, tribute tea flowed to the imperial court, and Chengde was the summer residence where the Qing emperors received Tibetan lamas, Mongol khans, and Russian envoys over a cup of tea. Tea tradition of Chengde as the summer capital of the Qing: Tibetan, Mongolian, and Sichuan teas came as tribute to the imperial court. Envoys were received with po cha (for Tibetans), sütei tsai (for Mongols), Longjing (for Chinese officials).

    Chengde Bishu Shanzhuang (避暑山庄) — the Qing emperors' mountain resort, UNESCO, the largest imperial park in China, 564 ha. Here Kangxi and Qianlong received envoys from Tibetan lamas to the English ambassador Macartney (1793). Tea pavilions over lakes. Imperial tea session — a reconstruction of an embassy reception with tasting of Longjing, Tieguanyin, Dahongpao. Forest Tree Park — deer roam freely.

    Путо Цзунчэн · Пунин Сы 普陀宗乘之庙·普宁寺

    Tibetan Temples of the North

    Putuo Zongcheng Si (普陀宗乘之庙) — 'Little Potala', a copy of the Lhasa Potala in Chengde, built by Qianlong in 1771 for receiving Tibetan pilgrims. UNESCO. Puning Si (普宁寺) — the largest bronze Bodhisattva Guanyin (1000 arms, 22 m). Po cha with monks — Tibetan tradition in the northern capital. Comparison: the real Potala (in Lhasa) vs the Little one (in Chengde).

    The Great Wall in the Sea

    Lao Long Tou (老龙头, 'Old Dragon's Head') — the eastern end of the Great Wall, UNESCO, where the wall enters the Bohai Sea. The only place in the world where the Great Wall meets the ocean. Tea picnic on the parapet — mountain tea with a sea breeze. Shanhaiguan (山海关, 'Pass between Mountain and Sea') — the main gate. Qinhuangdao — a modern resort, founded by Qin Shi Huang.

    Imperial Necropolis

    Eastern Qing Tombs (清东陵) — UNESCO, tombs of 5 emperors and 15 empresses of the Qing dynasty, including Kangxi, Qianlong, Cixi. 80 km² of majestic necropolis. Cixi's Tomb — excavated and looted in 1928, one can descend inside. Tea sacrifices — an ancient ritual, tea was placed on altars. Comparison: Eastern vs Western Qing Tombs.

    The Oldest Stone Bridge

    Anji Bridge (安济桥, Zhaozhou Bridge) — the oldest stone arch bridge in the world, 605 AD, Sui dynasty. 50 m long, 7 m wide. A marvel of engineering — it has stood for 1400+ years. Tribute caravans passed over it to Beijing and Chengde. Tea by the bridge — a tradition of 'drinking tea before a dangerous crossing'. Comparison with Ponte Vecchio — Anji is 800 years older.

    Bronze Guardian · Finale

    Iron Lion of Cangzhou (沧州铁狮子) — a 5.3 m bronze statue from 953 AD, Later Zhou dynasty. One of the oldest large bronze artifacts in China. On the Lion's back is a lotus throne, symbolizing Buddhist protection. Final tea session: tribute teas from all provinces on one table — Longjing, Tieguanyin, Dahongpao, Pu'er, Jasmine. Transport
Arrival at Shijiazhuang (SJW) or Beijing (PEK) with a transfer. High-speed train Beijing–Chengde in 4 hours. Minibus between points. Hebei embraces Beijing — many day trips possible.
Climate
Continental. Summer: 25–32°C, humid. Winter: -10°C, dry. Spring and autumn are the best times. The Bohai coast is cooler by 5°C.
What to bring
Comfortable shoes, windbreaker, raincoat, SPF in summer, tea thermos, cash (terminals are rarer outside Beijing), VPN for foreign services.
