Where the sky is closer than the earth, tea becomes a prayer

茶马古道

Tibet — the terminal point of the ancient Tea-Horse Road (Chama Gudao, 茶马古道), along which Sichuan and Yunnan brick tea ascended to the High Plateau in exchange for Tibetan steeds. Here, tea is not a beverage but the foundation of life: yak butter, salt, and brick tea are churned in a dongmo (churning stick), creating po cha (酥油茶), consumed in 30–40 cups a day. The route passes through sacred Lhasa with its Potala and Jokhang, the Tashilhunpo Monastery in Shigatse, the turquoise Yamdrok Lake, and the northern Everest Base Camp.

Teas of this area

По ча (масляный чай) 酥油茶

The life-sustaining drink of Tibetans: brick tea + yak butter + salt + soda churned in a dongmo. 30–40 cups a day. Calorie-dense, warming, protects against altitude sickness. Served with tsampa (barley flour) — the staple of Tibetan cuisine.

Кирпичный чай Цзанча 藏茶

Sichuan dark tea from Ya'an, specifically produced for Tibet for over 1000 years. Coarsely fermented, pressed into bricks. Earthy, sweet, thick. Without it, Tibetan cuisine is unthinkable.

Сладкий чай Лхасы 甜茶

British heritage via colonial India: black tea + milk + sugar. Popular in Lhasa since the 19th century. Served in chanchadian (sweet tea houses) — social hubs of the city, a cup for 1 yuan.
